On October 1 of each year, approximately 500,000 family based visas become available. Preference is giving to unmarried sons and daughters of U.S. citizens that are older than 21. Preference is then given to:
Spouses and children under 21 of legal permanent residents (people who have green cards)
Unmarried sons and daughters of permanent residents that are over 21
Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens
Brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens
